Simpson provides shelter to around seventy unhoused people each night\, and partners with community groups to prepare meals for shelter residents. This is a wonderful way to care for our Minnesota community in an animal-friendly\, eco-friendly way. \nVolunteering to Help\n***Without registering either below or at CAA.MN/VOLUNTEER your space will not be reserved\, you will not receive needed information\, and you will not be permitted in the building*** \nCAA provides a meal for Simpson guests around three times a month. Watch our events page for another opportunity to participate! Since most of our meals at Simpson’s fill up early we encourage you to sign up for any meal prep events you are interested in well in advance. \nSchedule for Lunch Volunteering\nFor our lunches we gather at 10:30am and together\, we prepare lunch in the kitchen\, and serve food to residents. Once food service comes to a lull\, we take breaks in small shifts to join the residents for lunch. After that\, we’ll rate the food\, and your rating will help us see how it stacks up against the many other restaurants in the competition! \n🍜 What’s the food? \nWe’ll all be trying out their 2026 Twin Cities Vegan Chef Challenge dish. The Korean BBQ Mushroom Ssam is a smoky blend of oyster\, king oyster\, and shiitake mushrooms in a tomato and pepper Korean BBQ sauce\, served with house-made kokuho rice\, lettuce\, and seasonal banchan. It’s a delicious\, savory\, flavorful dish\, perfect for splitting and sharing. The picture above shows a serving for two people\, and you can order a batch for 1-4 servings.  \nTori also offers a variety of other vegan dishes on the menu\, from the Bali Ramen (ground tofu\, szechuan peppers\, tahini) to the Shoyu Fire Ramen to appetizers like Korean Cucumbers. Just ask the servers about their menu options. Tori offers a choice of either rice noodles or wheat noodles\, and is able to make gluten-ingredient-free dishes\, though there is not a separate prep area. \n👨🏾‍🍳 What is the Twin Cities Vegan Chef Challenge?  \nEach August\, restaurants around the Twin Cities add a new vegan dish to the menu. Diners visit restaurants and rate each dish they try. Together we’ll run a trivia game about animal rights and welfare\, and supply people with recipes\, resources\, and actions they can take to protect farmed animals.  \nScroll down to see the volunteer signup for this event or visit caa.mn/volunteer to see all available volunteer signups! \nWhat Is Twin Cities Black Pride?\nCAA outreach at MN POC Pride in 2025  \nTwin Cities Black Pride Festival is hosted by MN POC Pride\, which describes it as a five-day celebration “uplifting LGBTQ+ people of color and our allies across Minnesota and the Upper Midwest.” The festival takes place August 12-16\, concluding with Family Day in the Park at Powderhorn Park on August 16. This event features live entertainment\, nonprofit and community tables\, merchandise booths\, food\, and more from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. \nYou’re welcome to plan time to walk around the event before or after your volunteer shift. \nVolunteering With Compassionate Action for Animals\nAt the event\, CAA will be tabling between 10:00am and 4:00pm on Sunday\, August 16. We’ll talk to attendees about compassion for farmed animals and plant-based eating. We’ll offer free games\, resources\, and magazines\, as well as quick actions people can take to protect animals. \nAt the front table\, we’ll have a spin wheel game where attendees guess an answer to a question that helps them learn about common animal agriculture practices. \nSample spin wheel questions include: \n\nChicken farmers are encouraged to provide how many square feet per chicken? [Answer: less than 1\, according to the National Chicken Council and average weights]\nNearly all pigs in the U.S. have parts of their body cut off without any painkillers. What part? [Answer: their tail\, according to studies from Porcine Health Management] \nOn egg farms\, what percentage of chicks are killed within 1 day of birth? [answer: 50% – look up chick culling] \n\nThe answers are all available on a cheat sheet for volunteers. This trivia format gives people heavy answers about animal cruelty in a digestible\, quick format. For young children who are still learning the basics of the world\, we have fun questions about animals (did you know fish can recognize different songs?). After the attendees play trivia\, we talk together about the question they got\, and provide concrete next steps\, like writing a letter to their representative or corporation or taking the Veg Pledge.  \nWho Can Volunteer?\nIf you’re passionate about animal protection and providing resources to help people move towards plant-based eating\, this event is for you. We’ll support you throughout your shift in how to do effective outreach.  \nWe ask that volunteers under 16 years old be accompanied by a parent\, guardian\, or other responsible adult. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, October 10 for a special fundraiser to help continue CAA’s shelter meal program into 2027. \nNicola\, who leads the meal program\, and Unny\, co-founder of Compassionate Action for Animals (CAA)\, are hosting this gathering as we work toward raising $2\,000—one-third of the funding needed to expand our shelter meal program to three shelters next year. \nUnny also turns 50 in October. What better way to celebrate than by supporting delicious\, low-carbon meals that nourish our neighbors while sparing animal lives? \nDetails\nDate:  Saturday\, October 10th\nTime:  12pm – 2:30pm\nLocation:  Nicola’s Eden Prairie home\, RSVP to receive the address \nAbout the event\n\nGet an update on the current meal program\, plans for the new year\, and how you can help make those plans a reality.\nConnect with supporters and shelter partners. (Optional get-to-know you bingo game!)\nHear from shelter volunteers about their experiences.\nEat a delicious\, plant-based lunch of dal\, rice and assorted vegetable dishes.\nCelebrate Unny’s 50th birthday\n\n  \nMore about the meal program\nCAA’s plant-based meal program started in collaboration with Simpson Housing Services\, a shelter for people experiencing homelessness in Minneapolis.  Since January 2024\, our volunteers have provided over 3\,000 meals at Simpsons.  Currently\, we serve 3 lunches every month and the resident chef has designated all Friday lunchtimes to be completely plant-based (even when we’re not there to prepare them). \n  \nIn March 2026\, we expanded our meal program to include a second shelter.  The Sojourner Project houses people victimized by domestic abuse.  Every month\, our volunteers prepare a healthy\, well-balanced\, crowd-pleasing dinner for them and the meals have received rave reviews! \n  \nNext year\, we hope to expand our program to bring wholesome\, tasty food to a third shelter. We need to raise $6\,000 to serve meals at all three shelters. The more meals we cook\, the more time\, energy and funds the staff of Simpsons\, Sojourner and others can devote towards housing\, supporting and advocating for people in their time of need.  Help us continue our work into 2027 by joining us at this fundraiser on October 10th!! \nCan’t join us or want to chip in now? \n \n
